CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago’s oldest theater company is celebrating its 90th season.

“It really has quite a long, unique history,” says Goodman Theatre Executive director Roche Schulfer who’s been with the Goodman for almost half its 90 years.

He says the group is kicking off its new season with the return of “Smokefall,” an acclaimed hit from last year, described as a modern-day version of “Our Town.”

The Goodman began in 1925 as a part of the Art Institute. It’s been independent of the museum for decades.

Among Schulfer’s proudest achievements: creating an annual Chicago holiday tradition.

“We have done ‘A Christmas Carol’ now for 37 years. I know it’s introduced tens of thousands of young people to theater over the course of the years.”

Along the way, the Goodman has re-interpreted the classics and introduced daring new plays.

It’s also nurtured the creative genius of such artists as playwright David Mamet and actor Brian Dennehy.

The Goodman’s production of “The Iceman Cometh,” with Dennehy and Nathan Lane heads to Broadway next February.
